What’s the History of Bubble Tea?

There is no documented evidence about the origin of bubble tea. However, there is a story famous about this tea. Back in the 1980s, this drink became popular in Taiwan as a refreshing post-work drink.

Taiwanese tea shops spread at every street corner, and the business owner started to differentiate their products. So, tea houses began searching for and creating more variations on their teas and beverages.

Also, an enterprise owner, Chun Shui Tang in Taichung differentiated its product by selling Chinese tea in iced form by taking an idea from iced Japanese coffee. Then after a few years, the product development manager at teahouse randomly poured her dessert into Assam iced tea. It was such a pleasant experience that they added it to the drink menu. It soon became the tea house’s best-selling product.

After the success of iced beverage at one tea house, franchises all over Taiwan started adding chewy pearls and different fruity flavors to their iced teas. And so began this hang out tea as we now know it! The cooked pearls are chewy; however, lack any flavor. But they become much sweeter after being soaked in sugary syrup.

No doubt, the main ingredients of this tea can be healthy on their own. However, when drowned in too much sweetener, artificial flavor, or processed ingredients, all the nutrition is lost. Consuming too many sugars, especially those found in drinks lead to increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and even cancer.
